All are invited to a winter storytelling event

In Native American cultures, storytelling is a time-honored tradition and an art form. So is lending a helping hand.

The Robbinsdale Area Schools (Rdale) American Indian Education Program will do both next month, when it partners with the Edina Public Schools American Indian Education program to host a winter storytelling event.

Beth Tepper, director of achievement and integration, notes that Edina’s American Indian Education program is relatively small compared to Rdale's. “We share the same work. Their district is close to ours,” she says, “and some of our staff are involved with their parent advisory committee. Connecting our students and families seems like the right thing to do as we practice the Dakota value of wauƞṡida, showing compassion with each other by being a good relative."

The free event is open to the public and takes place at 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at FAIR School Crystal, 3915 Adair Ave. N.

Storytellers include:

  • Hope Flanagan, Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation of Indians
  • Jerry Dearly, Oglala Lakota Nation

Children can enjoy crafts during the event. Powwow Grounds will provide cedar berry tea and three sisters soup for all to enjoy.
